We're excited to introduce a new series at Cookson: "Counterbalance: An Open Door Conversation" with our Architectural Design Support and Architectural Product Representative Teams. Each week, you'll meet one of our associates and learn more about their roles and lives.
Meet Jason Millard, PMP
Title: Architectural Design Support, Project Manager
How he describes his role: I run the gamut of complexity with the projects that come to us. The majority of it is custom work and more complex requests. I work on everything from meetings to the order itself. I help with getting engineering up to speed, and with any special sketches that are required. Our Architectural Design Support Team in general doesn’t get calls for a 10x10 machine operated door. People know how to do that. We help with questions like: “I don’t know what product to use.” “How do I make it fit?” “How do I make it meet all the building codes and fire codes?” We do a design consultation for it, get the technical info, and help people go through the bid process smoothly.
Tenure at CornellCookson: I’ve been in the ADS department for 12 years, and started at CornellCookson in 1997. I began my career in what was formerly called contract engineering (now called product engineering), then moved to technical services, which later became the ADS department.
Most memorable/favorite project: My most memorable project was completing a metal shutterhouse. I learned so much from that project, and from working with all contractors and dealers. It was totally off-the-wall from what we were used to doing at the time.
Another favorite is from Urban Outfitters – we created a commercial-sized venetian blind for them that had a custom extrusion. When the grille was open, that was the sign for the store, and when it closed you could still see the logo.
On his career growth: Going from contract engineering to learning how to and being able to work with people on the production floor and people in product strategy – I really learned to flex and adapt based on the situation. Anticipating and recognizing opportunities for our customers is key.
If Jason could do another job for just one day: I’d run a gym or a bike shop that gets people more active. I like working out and mountain biking and would share that knowledge.
Last TV show watched: “The Boys” on Amazon. I’m hooked – it’s such a better take to see superheroes in the real world with real problems.
Words of advice for people in industry: Stay humble. There’s always something to learn from each expert in their field. Listening and approaching everything as a consultant will end up growing your potential.
Favorite desk tchotchke: A drawing my 5-year-old daughter left here for me.
Hobbies: Cycling, basketball, and anything that involves the outdoors.
Outside of work, Jason likes to: Spend time with his family (his wife and three daughters), walk his 2 dogs (yellow lab and whippet mixes), and doing any outdoor activity that keeps him active.
