Meet Jim Kinney
Title: Architectural Design Support
How he describes his role: As the first point of contact in the ADS Department, I assist our architectural customers by helping them learn about our products, use the tools we provide on our website, and select the products that best fit their application. Our department receives many requests for unique design assistance, and in these instances, I assist the architect to make sure that all pertinent information is included before forwarding to the design team. We have a great group of engineers that are always ready to assist with the specifications and drawings, and this collaboration has enhanced the successful flow of work in the department.
Tenure at CornellCookson: My career began over 46 years ago as an engineering aide. I was promoted to a draftsman position within a year. Spending approximately 7 years in that position, I transitioned to the role of Contract Coordinator in our Sales Department. While working in this area, I was responsible for processing most of our orders and for review and execution of all direct contract documents. This allowed me to work closely with our Accounting Department, and I was fortunate to learn a lot about the financial side of the construction industry. Through the years, I have held positions such as production scheduler, assistant regional manager, and customer support representative. This experience has provided me with a solid foundation not only in our products, but in their application as well. This broad-based perspective allows me to assist in all areas of architectural support.
Most memorable/favorite project: My favorite project was the one I worked on for The Mall of America in Minneapolis, MN. Working directly with both our dealer and the contractor on that project allowed me to gain a great amount of knowledge on the overarching construction process. The large number of grilles in that location alone has allowed for great exposure for the company.
If Jim could do another job for just one day: Having played baseball from a very young age, I would love to pitch a game for the New York Yankees (hopefully a win!). As a Yankee fan it was such a treat and an eye-opening experience to visit Yankee Stadium for the first time, so being on the pitcher’s mound with the crowd cheering would certainly be a dream come true.
Last TV show watched: "Good Morning America," "Jeopardy," and anything on HGTV.
Words of advice for people in industry: Read as much as possible, and learn as much as you can. Do not be afraid to ask questions and ask again if you don’t understand the answer. Take notes when learning something new and avail yourself to all the help you can get – this helps you to grow both professionally and personally.
Favorite desk tchotchke: A photo of me with my grandson.
Hobbies: Too many to mention, but I do love hunting, fishing, and playing the guitar.
Outside of work, Jim likes to: Spend time with his family. They love Disney World and have visited over 30 times.
